Safety Tips
Officers provide full law enforcement service at all district locations, and maintain a collaborative and reporting relationship. The Contra Costa Community College District Police Department is a California certified police department with the law enforcement agencies at sites where police officers are not assigned. Even though the district police department works closely with the neighboring law enforcement agencies and employs security measures to reduce and prevent crime, security is ultimately everyone's responsibility. Here's what you can do!
The following safety tips will give you the right attitudes and actions so that you can protect yourself, your belongings, fellow students and campus. Campus safety depends on everyone.
Personal safety
- Be alert to your surroundings and the people around you -- especially if you are alone or it is dark.
- Stay on well-traveled paths in open areas. Avoid dark, concealed, or unpopulated areas.
- If possible, walk with a friend -- even during daylight hours.
- Walk confidently, directly and at a steady pace.
- If you feel you are being followed, walk quickly to areas where there are other people. If in danger, screaming or yelling loudly will attract attention.
Personal property security
- In order to protect your personal property, never leave it unattended.
- If you are studying in a classroom or in the library, or eating in the cafeteria, make sure you take your property with you if you leave your study area for whatever reason.
- If you have an office on campus, always lock your door when you leave, even if you are going to be out for just a few minutes.
- If you ride a bicycle to campus, make sure that you lock it with a heavy chain and padlock, and always secure it to a proper bicycle rack. Do not lock bicycles in doorways or stairway railings.
Vehicle safety
- Always lock your car and take your keys with you.
- Be sure your windows are secured.
- All packages should be hidden in the trunk when the car is left unattended.
- Never leave visible valuables inside a car -- including stereo systems.
- Never leave items containing your name or address visible in your car.
- Install a quality anti-theft device which disables the electrical and fuel systems of the vehicle.
