  • is 18 years of age or older;
  • has passed the State of California Certificate of Proficiency Test or the General Educational Development Test (GED);

If you are a NEW STUDENT:

New students are those students who have never attended college or who have completed less than 12 units of college work. If you have never attended DVC:

  1. Complete an application to DVC and turn it into the Admissions Office.
  2. Sign up for assessment and COUNSELING 105 - ORIENTATION TO COLLEGE at the Admissions Office. (You receive priority status for registration upon completion of Counseling 105. If you choose not to attend Counseling 105, your registration date will be significantly delayed and you will only be able to meet with a counselor during Open Registration, the week before classes begin, or after the new term begins.)
  3. Go to the Book Center and purchase a Starter Kit. This contains the required materials you will need for your first meeting of Counseling 105.
If you are a TRANSFER STUDENT:
  • Do you have fewer than 12 units from another college? You will need to follow the NEW STUDENTS admissions procedures.
  • Do you have more than 12 college units from another college? Follow these steps:
  1. Complete an application at the Admissions Office.
  2. Have your official transcript(s) from your previous college(s) mailed to Admissions at least two weeks prior to your counseling appointment.
  3. If you did not take a math or English course at your previous college, take an Assessment test prior to your counseling appointment.
  4. Make an appointment with a counselor to determine the transferability of your prior coursework.
If you are a RETURNING STUDENT: If you did not attended DVC the previous term, you will need to complete a new application at the ADMISSIONS OFFICE to register for classes. You must have an application on file to make an appointment with a counselor.

3. How will I be placed in English and mathematics courses?
Because students enter college with differing levels of preparation and different goals, and because some English and math courses have prerequisites, we ask students to take an assessment test and meet with a counselor for placement into those courses. The assessment test for math and English take approximately 3 hours, and in addition to multiple choice questions, you will also be asked to write a short essay.

For further information, contact the Assessment Center at (925) 685-1230, Ext. 2545. The hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday (see Campus Map). See further information on-line
