Fall 2010 schedule - pdf

Budget cut update:
Welcome to the fall semester and a class schedule that lists more than 55 new classes and events. Our hardworking staff has again provided a great selection to pique your interest.

The last time we wrote was to inform you of the massive cuts in state funding to education and the Community College District’s decision to close the Walnut Creek facility.

Now, the other shoe has dropped. The remaining financial support to the Emeritus program, about $23,500 per year, has been cut. The elimination of this funding means that we are now expected to be fully self-supporting.

Faced with finding ways to cover the shortfall, the options open to us are cutting staff hours, applying for matching grants, fundraising, or increasing class fees. We are trying a little of each option to spread the pain while protecting the quality of programming.

Our staff, of two part-time employees, has cut their hours. We would have cut their benefits but they don’t receive any. Funding for our student assistants has been decreased. We are not yet sure of the number of hours that will be covered.

Foundations are currently being barraged by others, like us, facing loss of funding. We may qualify for matching funds. Such requests would require that we raise an equivalent amount of revenue by fundraising or donations.

The Board has four fun fundraisers planned for fall (try saying that five times fast). You can help by bringing a friend or two to the following events: The Ruth Bancroft Garden Tour and Luncheon, the Holiday Brunch, the Holiday High Tea, or our private performance of Nunset Blvd. Tickets to these events will make great holiday gifts for friends and family. Details are included in this insert.

Times are tough for all of us, but if you want to see Emeritus continue to offer excellent programming at affordable prices, we must appeal directly to you. We ask that you include Emeritus in your charitable giving for this year or sponsor one day of a class you enjoy for $100. These donations are tax deductible.

Since this school year will be the 20th anniversary of Emeritus College, we are proposing that each of us make an additional one time donation of $20 to help make up the shortfall to this year’s budget. Our mantra is Donate $20 for our 20 years of remarkable Emeritus programming.

With sincere thanks,
DG Kingsbury, Emeritus College Advisory Board Chairman
Jo Mele, Emeritus College Executive Director
