IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE

Learn to improve your balance with techniques taught in physical therapy classes. We will use gentle wall, chair and floor exercise to stretch and strengthen the muscles needed for good balance. Wear loose comfortable clothing, flat supportive shoes and bring a mat. Handouts will be provided so you can continue these exercises at home.

Instructor: Katia Georgieva is a long-time coach and aide for those with balance problems.

The fascinating women for discussion will include, among others: writer and political activist Zitkala Sa, commercial artist Angel deCora, Chief of the Cherokee Wilma Mankiller, and anthropologist Ella DeLoria. We will also take a fresh look at the real lives of Pocahontas and Sacagawea.

Instructor: Julie Hicks, BA., Cultural Anthropology / minor in American Indian Studies, San Francisco State University, is involved with local Native American issues and events.

Some call Tai Chi a form of moving meditation. Focusing the mind solely on the movements helps one achieve a state of mental calm and clarity. Please wear loose comfortable clothes, flat-soled shoes and bring water to class.

Instructor: Alan Kite, PhD., applied anthropologist at the University of Arizona, producer of diverse cultural interpretive projects for varied southwestern communities.

We will view movie clips from Measure For Measure and Winter's Tale and discuss Shakespeare’s fascinating use of higher power in his dramas.

THE ORIGINS OF CHRISTIAN ART

We will discuss the formative stages of early Christian art (3rd to 5th centuries) when places of worship and burial used decoration clearly acknowledging the new religion. Early Christian artists drew on the existing artistic vocabulary of non-Christian cultures with most of their works functioning as symbols of concepts such as rebirth, salvation, and unity.

Instructor: Teodora Navid, PhD., Indiana University, History of Art, has taught college level courses in art history and art appreciation for many years.

  3. October 20 – Ella Fitzgerald (1999) concert footage, interviews with family and colleagues.
  4. October 27 – Been Rich All My Life (2005) Silver Belles. 80+year-old tap dancers and former chorus girls.

Instructor: Michael Berg, MA., Master of Fine Arts, University of North Carolina. Works for Center REP in W.C. and is a resident costumer for the Ross Valley Players.
