WORLD RELIGIONS Take a comparative journey into the fundamental beliefs, symbols, and mythology of the world's five major traditions: Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Emphasis will be on the unique aspects of each tradition and the commonality of shared values. We will discuss concepts such as ‘Holy War’ or ‘Chosen-ness,’ and explore the changing notions of the Divine as it relates to everyday life. RUSSIAN COMPOSERS Glinka wanted to develop a new Russian style of music divorced from German and French influences. He began with his opera Russlan and Ludmilla. We will see and hear Prince Igor, Boris Godunov, Sheherazade, Capriccio Espagnol, and hear Tchaikovsky Symphonies, Rachmaninoff's concertos and excerpts from Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Shostokovich. WITCHES AND WITCHCRAFT Witches, witchcraft, and witch-hunting continue to fascinate us. Questions of why, when, and who were accused of suspicious activity of entering into a contract with the Devil, keep returning in the research of scholars of various disciplines. AMERICAN MUSICAL THEATER We will examine the American musical from its earliest days as musical comedy to the more dramatic shows of the 1950s and 1960s. We will look at the composers who made differences in our perception of what a musical is, and what can be accomplished in a musical.
