Mark Marshall - Assistant Track & Field
2000, 2002-2005
Entering his 16th year of coaching, his 5th year at Diablo Valley College as a
throws specialist, Coach Marshall has coaching experience at all levels of
athletics (football and track & field) from different schools around the Bay
Area. His coaching beginning was in 1989 where he was an assistant football
coach at the youth level. From 1990 until 1994 was the throws coach at
California High School. In 1995, he was a throws specialist for
Menlo-Atherton High School in Menlo Park.
1996 brought a new beginning for Coach Marshall as he decided instructing and
coaching at a community college to be his primary focus. The distinguished
Norm Guest, former head track & field and cross country coach at Chabot
College, hired Mark to coach the “throws” that year as he also became a
part-time instructor for the Gladiators. In 2000, Marshall left Chabot
College for Diablo Valley College, a college much closer to his home and
family in Benicia. While at the community college level, Marshall also
coached or consulted as a throws specialist for individuals and teams at
several high schools in the bay area.
Coach Marshall has wide-range experience with student-athletes by means of his
teaching and coaching skills. He has experience with youngsters, having
taught physical education to intermediate school aged children in Palo Alto in
1996-1997. Marshall has also taught kindergarten through 8th grade physical
education in Oakland from 1998 through 2000 to add to his vast experience with
youth and diversity. He has also served as a camp director at local summer
camps in San Ramon from 1991 to 1999. “Marks’ teaching methods and experience
with youth has given him an incredible sensitivity and patience which our
athlete’s greatly appreciate. He has a passion for the throwing events, with
the hammer throw being his specialty”, according to Coach Cruz.
Mark Marshall, born and raised in the East Bay,
started his educational career with an A.A. in Law Enforcement. Upon deciding
that education and coaching was an area where he could impact people's lives
more effectively, changed his major to Kinesiology with an emphasis in Skill
Acquisition and Sport Psychology. While completing his B.S. and M.S. at
California State University, Hayward, he studied the throws, using a
specificity position, under his esteemed professor, Dr. Don Sawyer. In
addition to assisting as a throws coach, Mark is currently a part-time
instructor at DVC. He lives in Benicia with his wonderful wife, Julie and
their son Joseph. |
