2002 Season in Review The 2002 season brought the DVC women’s soccer program to a new level of competition. With being grouped into the Bay Valley Conference’s “Super” division with eventual Final Four teams Santa Rosa and Sierra colleges, and perennial powerhouses such as American River and Yuba colleges, DVC found itself competing in what was considered the strongest conference in the state. Prior to conference competition, the Vikings worked towards a 6-3-3 record with significant wins over Solano, Butte, and College of the Sequoias. Sophomores Andrea Dowling and Erin Hertel led the way in scoring, while Tawhnee Jackson solidified the Viking defense with oustanding goalkeeping. Conference play saw little dominance by any one team, with each game in the division being highly competitive. The Vikings emerged from conference competition with their second consecutive playoff birth and an overall record of 8-10-3. They succumbed to second seeded Santa Rosa Jr. College in the first round of playoffs in Santa Rosa. The team was honored with a selection of midfielder Erin Hertel to the Bay Valley, and Northern California, All-Conference Teams. Hertel was the team’s second leading scorer, and played nearly every minute of the season for the Vikings. Head coach Cailin Mullins offered, “This 2002 was a learning season for our program. We were challenged by the new structure of our conference divisions and greatly benefited from the strength of the Gold division. It was an exciting achievement for us to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season.” |
