CFK Frequently Asked Questions

Please note that due to COVID-19 we have changed our usual dates, times, and brochure distribution.

How can I ensure I receive the latest news on CFK?
Please sign-up for our e-newsletter to receive email updates.  To receive a PDF version of the brochure, please email CommunityEd@dvc.edu.

What are the dates for College for Kids?
College for Kids classes will run 2 session (2 weeks each session) during a four week period (July 13-Aug 6) as regular summer school classes at Diablo Valley College, so students gain the feel of a real college campus environment.  Classes are on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday - no classes on Friday.

When will the schedule be available?
We will do our best to release an online copy of our schedule a week before registration.

What can I do before day one to ensure my child as a seamless start?

Please download and print the CFK Checklist.

Will my child be escorted around campus for each class?
No.  Part of the College for Kids experience is encouraging independence. College for Kids parents are permitted to assist their children to find their classrooms if they wish.  Please visit the campus prior to day one and show your child around.

How will drop-off and pick-up work?
For Pleasant Hill campus families, we will be designating pick-up zones for students (alphabetically by last name).

College for Kids staff will be available in the designated zones to guide and monitor drop-offs and pick-ups.  Any unsafe behavior witnessed by CFK staff, will be reported to Police Services.

Pleasant Hill kids who end their day with us at 4:15 p.m. and are still not picked up by 4:30 p.m. will be escorted to Police Services for pick-up.

If you cannot pick up your child within 15 minutes after their last class, and you are comfortable with them waiting for you in the Library or Media Center (those 2 locations only), please send us an email stating they  are allowed to do so, without CFK supervision.  Print out this email and place in your child’s backpack.  Children are not permitted to be on campus alone without written permission from parent/guardian - this may lead to immediate dismissal from the program.

For San Ramon campus families, please drop-off/pick-up your child behind the campus.  P

All children must be picked up no later than 15 minutes after their last class ends.

My child will get to campus on his/her own. Is there a procedure for that?
College for Kids understands there are families who are comfortable with their children walking, bussing or biking to campus.  Since this is outside of our drop-off/pick-up procedure, it is up to you to work with your child on this.  College for Kids staff will only monitor drop-off/pick-up at designated zones.

For San Ramon families, an email will be sent to San Ramon families prior to day one.

If I need assistance on day one, where can I get help?
PLEASANT HILL CAMPUS:  We will have staff at our basecamp table located in the library quad, outside of the College for Kids office.  Staff will be there the first 2 days of each session only.  After that, you may go to the College for Kids office, L-146, for assistance.

SAN RAMON CAMPUS:  TBD.  An email will be sent to San Ramon families prior to day one.

How will my child get to each class?
We encourage parents to escort their child, if they can (during the first 2 days).  We ask that the instructors/aides are not disrupted before, after or during class.

For Pleasant Hill families, before each period, aides will be stationed around campus to help point kids in the right direction. Each aide will wear a blue vest, name tag, and will have a radio. Sign boards will also be located around campus.

For San Ramon families, an email will be sent to San Ramon families prior to day one.

What is the refund policy?
To receive a full refund of tuition, the class/es must be dropped at least 7 days prior to the class start date. Please allow up to 15 days for refunds to be applied.

Can parents access the campus WiFi?
No. No exceptions. Please do not request access to WiFi from the CFK office, Library or IT.

My child is registered for a class that meets 2 or 3 hours straight.  Will there be breaks for snacks, restroom, etc.?
Yes.  For a class that meets for 2 hours, your child can expect at least 1 break.

Do I need to let the office know of any schedule adjustments for my child?
Yes. If you know your child is going to be absent for any length of time, please email our office at CommunityEd@dvc.edu or call 925-969-4600. Our instructors will take roll daily. Any absences we are not made aware of will result in a call to the parent/guardian.

If your child is going to be late, please notify our office. If your child will be picked up early, please notify our office.  You can pick your child up at the College for Kids office. You are not permitted to go to the classroom to pick up your child.  Instructors will not release children to anyone other than staff.

How will behavioral issues be handled?
Depending on the severity of the behavior and frequency:

1.    Instructors/aides will work directly with the student in class.

2.    If the behavior continues and is deemed disruptive to the other students in the class, the student will be escorted to the College for Kids office and the parent will be called.

3.    If the behavior is deemed dangerous, violent, bullying, etc., the student will be removed immediately and the parent will be called. Depending on the severity of the behavior, the student may be dropped from the program immediately for the summer.
