What does an Artist do?

  • Artists express their own thoughts and feelings by creating fine art works which are primarily intended for aesthetic enjoyment.
  • Fine art differs from commercial art in that the Artist retains responsibility for the selection of subject matter, medium, and method of execution.
  • Painters use oil, water colors, acrylics, and other media to produce visual images on surfaces ranging from canvases to the sides of buildings.

Most artists are self-employed. Others teach in schools and colleges. Many have private students. Among painters and sculptors, approximately 37% nationally are self-employed.

Preparation:

Extensive formal educational training and study in Art is considered important. However, there is no specific path that Artists use to become established as professionals. Some Artists are self-taught. Coursework is available in four-year colleges and universities, community colleges, and private vocational schools.
