Typical Employers:
Television stations, motion picture producers, and advertising agencies are
the chief employers. Many cinematographers also find freelance work with
businesses or educational institutions. Others are employed by the military.
Preparation:
Directors select Cinematographers who they believe will work harmoniously
with the crew. They base their selection on reputation or on their 'reel', a
sort of resume on film. While being trained or working as an assistant, you
should be collecting your best work for your reel. For television and big movie
productions union membership may be necessary before being hired. Many schools
in many states offer courses in Camera Operation and Filmmaking. Skills can be
learned in college or on the job. Art and/or Film Appreciation, and other
liberal arts courses are valuable. One way to become a Cinematographer is to
join the union as a film loader. Some people begin as Stage Hands and volunteer
to operate the camera in an emergency. Progress through the union is slow and
some people choose to work as freelance Cinematographers. If they later want to
enter the union, their Producer may be able to arrange admission. You can also
get training and experience in the military.
