Typical Employers:
Employers may recruit through your school placement office, advertise in
newspaper want ads, list openings with the public and private employment
agencies. Some people learn of openings through family and friends. Most
employees accept applications. One way to gain experience and learn of job
openings is through temporary help agencies. Employers may require an oral
interview, a portfolio of your work, and sometimes drug tests.
Preparation:
It takes from one year up to two years of experience to qualify. Employers
prefer those with an AA degree. People with college training (A.A. degree) in
drafting supplemented with some experience will have a better chance of finding
a job. Demand is strongest for people with technical skills in mechanical,
electrical, civil, structural and environmental design. Programs of study should
include courses in computer-aided design and drafting. You can also get training
and education in the military.
