How do I enroll in Co-op Education?

  1. New and Continuing students MUST complete a Co-op Application. You can print the application, complete and return it to the office via mail, drop-in or fax (925-691-7538)
    Or

You can pick up an application in the Career & Employment Services Office located in the Student Services Center, Room 138.

  2. When the application is returned, you will be notified via email, phone or in-person which section number to enroll in.

  3. You must attend a Mandatory Co-op Orientation Meeting at the start of each term.

Note: ALL students must attend the Mandatory Orientation Meeting. No shows will be dropped. The remainder of the course is conducted through meeting times arranged with your Co-op instructor.

  4. After receiving your Co-op section number, you can enroll through Admissions and Records or using Web Advisor. You can refer to the copy of your Schedule of Classes for the time and day of the one-time Mandatory Orientation Meeting.

Do you need a job/internship/volunteer position to enroll in Co-op education?

Yes! If you do not have a job or internship, Employment Services is committed to providing ample opportunities for you to get a job which is suitable for Co-op units. Any job or internship in which the student is regularly supervised and which offers a learning experience through the establishment of learning objectives is suitable.

If you are not volunteering, Volunteer Services is a resource for students interested in volunteering. You may search for opportunities that address community-identified needs or those that facilitate your academic, personal and/or civic growth.

Three types of Cooperative Education:

  • COOP 160* is for students whose jobs DO NOT relate to their college major or career goal.
  • COOP 170 is for students whose jobs RELATE to their college major or career goals.
  • COOP 170A is for students in a volunteer position or internship.

*As part of your COOP 160 enrollment, we highly recommend that you enroll in a Career Course. This assists students, especially undecided majors, in gaining career information, determining their own interests and aptitudes, learning about job rights, interview techniques and other useful information.

What is a Co-op Internship?

A Co-op internship is experiential learning from on-the-job experience.  It involves working in a skilled or professional level assignment in the area of the student's vocation of academic major or interest.  Internships may be paid or non-paid.  Co-op internships require a faculty supervisor.  Check your catalog for more information.
