Field Studies 234

Field Studies 234 is operated by Career & Employment Services and allows students the opportunity for increased learning through involvement as a teacher's, lab or research assistant. May be repeated for a maximum of 12 units.

Enrollment Requirements:

  1. To become an teacher's, lab or research assistant you must contact the instructor with whom you wish to work.

  2. After the instructor agrees to work with you, obtain a Field Studies 234 Application & Agreement Form from Career & Employment Services, located in the Student Services Center, room 138.

  3. After completing the top part of the form, work with the instructor to develop three measurable learning objectives reflecting new and expanded learning that will take place during the semester/session. These objectives must reflect assistance to the instructor and/or students rather than self-growth.

  4. After you, the instructor and division dean have signed the form, return it to Career & Employment Services to obtain your section number, so you can enroll through Admissions & Records.

What can Field Studies 234 Students Do? Check out sample duties: Sample FS duties

  • Teacher Assistant: Works with an instructor in a class. Prepares and presents subject matter; acts as a discussion group leader; meets with students outside of class to discuss problems or projects; helps with reading and evaluation of class assignments.

  • Lab Assistant: Works under supervision in the reading, math, biology, writing or accounting labs helping students on a one-to-one basis.

  • Research Assistant: Does research related to a particular class or discipline in conjunction with an instructor. The research assistant usually works independently and meets with the instructor once a week.

Important Information:

  • You WILL NOT be officially enrolled until an application is on file in the Career & Employment Services office and you register through the Admissions & Records office.

  • Deadline for enrollment is the end of the fourth (4th) week of the Fall or Spring semester.

  • You may not earn Field Studies 234 credit for a class section in which you are currently enrolled.

  • Be sure the days/hours you indicate you will assist the instructor and do not conflict with your class schedule.

  • You may NOT change the number of Field Studies units after the 3rd week of classes.

End-of-Term Evaluation: At the end of the semester your supervising instructor will evaluate and grade your performance on the objectives and return the form the Career & Employment Services Office.

6   hours/week = 1 Unit
8   hours/week = 2 Units

9   hours/week = 1 Unit

12 hours/week = 2 Units
21 hours/week = 3 Units
