Academic Standing

How is academic standing determined?
Honors

A student who has attempted 12 or more units, maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, and has completed more than 50% of their attempted units.

Good Standing

A student who has attempted 12 or more units, maintained a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above, and has completed more than 50% of their attempted units.

Academic/Progress Alert 1 (Formerly Probation 1)

Academic Alert Level 1: A student who has not achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above.

Progress Alert Level 1: A student who has not completed 50% of their attempted units.

Student on Alert Level 1 will:

  • Have a hold placed on their record.
  • Be required to complete the Alert 1 Workshop in Canvas or meet with a DVC Counselor to lift their hold.
  • Need to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above and/or complete more than 50% of their attempted units or they may be placed on academic and/or progress alert level II.

Alert 1 Workshop

Academic/Progress Alert 2 (Formerly Probation 2)

Academic Alert Level 2: A student who has not achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above for two consecutive terms.

Progress Alert Level 2: A student who has not completed 50% of their attempted units for two consecutive terms.

Student on Alert Level 2 will: 

  • Have a hold placed on their record.
  • Be required to sign up for and attend the virtual Alert 2 Workshop through Starfish or meet with a DVC Counselor to lift their hold.
  • Need to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above and/or complete more than 50% of their attempted units or they may be placed on academic and/or progress dismissal. 

Other Possible Consequences

  • Loss of Priority Registration
  • Loss of California Promise Grant
  • Loss of Full Time Free Tuition award.
  • Potential loss of Financial Aid Award

Alert 2 Workshop Registration

Academic/Progress Dismissal

Academic Dismissal: A student who has not achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above for three consecutive terms.

Progress Dismissal: A student who has not completed 50% or more of their attempted units for three consecutive terms.

These students will:

  • Have a hold placed on their record. 
  • Be required to attend a Reinstatement Workshop and complete the application for reinstatement. During the workshop students will be scheduled to meet with a counselor for a one-on-one education plan appointment.
  • Possibly have limitations on enrollment, if conditionally approved for reinstatement.
  • Need to achieve a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above and/or complete more than 50% of their attempted units or they may be placed on dismissal status again.

Other Consequences

  • Loss of Priority Registration
  • Loss of California Promise Grant
  • Loss of Full Time Free Tuition award.
  • Loss of Financial Aid Award
  • May also be required to sit out for a term within the Contra Costa Community College District (Contra Costa College, Diablo Valley College, and Los Medanos College).

NOTE: After completing the workshop, students will be scheduled to meet with a DVC counselor to review their reinstatement form. Forms are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with no guarantee of approval.
