What can I do with a culinary arts certificate?

Articulation agreements with many four-year colleges offering culinary degrees, including University of Nevada – Las Vegas and Johnson and Wales University, make transferring easy. Nearly every course taken at DVC is fully transferable. Our chefs and instructors work in partnership with the counseling center to help students with articulation agreements, transfer requirements and recommendations. Graduates enter the culinary field well prepared for entry-level employment, many progressing to the position of executive chef. Successful DVC alumni can be found working in fine establishments everywhere from the prestigious Ritz Carlton and Masa's in San Francisco, to Mandalay Bay and Bellagio in Las Vegas. In California the hospitality industry is growing 4.7% each year! Opportunities have never been better. According to the National Restaurant Association's 1998 survey, Compensation for Salaried Personnel in Restaurants, the median salary for an assistant chef was up to $31,000 or more and a chef earned up to $45,000 or more.

How long will it take to earn a certificate?

The certificate requires 51 total units. Generally, students take two years to complete all the courses required for the certificate.

Are there any additional costs?

In addition to textbooks, HRM students are required to purchase uniforms and tools for laboratory classes. Program scholarships are available and all students are given the opportunity to earn enough money to cover tuition by maintaining a perfect attendance record.
