What can I do with an Broadcast Communication Arts certificate/degree?

After you have earned a certificate of achievement/degree in broadcast communication arts, you will be well prepared for an entry-level position in the broadcast industry. If you are interested in transferring to a four-year institution, you will have completed many of the lower division courses needed to work towards a bachelor of arts degree in broadcast communications. Interested students should check with their instructor or counselor for specific transfer requirements for the four-year college they have chosen.

Earning potential in broadcast communications can vary greatly. On-camera talent earns a far greater- than-average salary but an experienced broadcast technician in the Bay Area earns a competitive wage ranging from $40,000 to $70,000 or more annually according to the 2000 U.S. Department of Labor Statistics.  Most broadcast stations offer retirement benefits and many positions are associated with one of several unions.

When are classes offered?

To complete the courses for the program, it is necessary to attend a combination of day and evening courses.

How long will it take to earn a certificate/degree?

Generally, students take three semesters to complete all the courses required for the certificate or major. Associate degree requirements can generally be completed in two years of full-time study.

How do I enroll in the certificate program?

Once you begin taking classes in the BCA program you are automatically enrolled. In your last semester you simply go to the Admission Office and apply for the certificate.

What will I learn through the broadcast communication certificate program?

This program prepares students for entry-level positions in the broadcast communication industries such as: associate producer, assistant director, on-camera talent, camera operator, sound technician, video switcher, floor director, videotape editor, production assistant, radio board operator, radio producer, radio production engineer, and radio on-air talent.

Selected courses in the program may meet some lower division requirements for the bachelor of arts program at certain California State University campuses. Consult with department faculty or a college counselor for more information.

To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete the required courses with a “C” grade or better. Required courses can only be completed by attending a combination of day and evening classes. Students may also earn an associate in arts degree. See the A.A. degree requirements listed in the “Transfer and DVC degrees” section of this catalog.
