Frequently Asked Questions - EOPS & CARE     

What is EOPS?

EOPS is the Extended Opportunity Programs and Services.  A state funded educational support services program designed to assist low-income while pursuing studies at a community college and to promote their retention, graduation, transfer and/or transition to employment.

What is CARE?

CARE is the Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education. This program provides support services to assist single parents who are participating in CalWORKs and/or TANF/AFDC, and who have children under the age of 14 years old.  CARE students must first qualify for the EOPS program.

Who is eligible for EOPS?

  • You must be a California Resident.
  • You must enroll in at least 12 units of credit classes each semester (exceptions may be made for individuals with a documented disability).
  • You must have completed less that 70 degree applicable college units and may not have an AA degree.
  • Qualify for the Board of Governors enrollment fee waiver (BOG-W) to meet the required income criteria.
  • You must be educationally disadvantaged as determined by meeting at least one the designated factors such as; first-generation college student, no high school diploma, remedial studies in high school or college, etc.

What are the benefits of the EOPS and CARE programs?

  • Academic, personal and career counseling, and orientation.
  • Priority registration, academic progress monitoring, and peer advising.
  • Book vouchers, grants, work-study, ASDVC student body card.
  • Application fee waivers for California State University and University of California transfer applications.
  • Field trips to four-year colleges.
  • High school outreach/recruitment, summer bridge program.
  • Alpha Gamma Sigma (Honor Society) membership fee, Career 110 materials fee.
  • CARE supplemental grants for study-time child care, transportation, and book vouchers.

To remain eligible for EOPS until you complete 70 degree applicable college units, you must:

  • Enroll in 12 units each fall and spring semester and complete at least 67% of enrolled unts at the end of semester with a 2.00 GPA.
  • Complete 2 academic counseling visits and 1 peer advising visit each semester.
  • If you withdraw from college for either fall or spring semester, you must reapply for the EOPS program when you return to college.
