Cal Grant

There are three main types of Cal Grant: A, B and C; these are either Entitlement or Competitive in nature.  Cal Grant A can be used for fees and tuition at public and private colleges (not Community Colleges).  Cal Grant B provides low-income students with a living allowance and assistance with tuition and fees.  The maximum a Community College student can receive in one year through Cal Grant B is $1,551.  There is also a Cal Grant B Transfer Entitlement Award.  High school seniors who graduate after June 30, 2000, attend a California Community College and then transfer to a baccalaureate-degree granting institution may be eligible.  Please note: the Cal Grant B Transfer Entitlement Award cannot be used at Diablo Valley College; it can only be used when transferring into a four-year institution.  If you are awarded the Cal Grant B Transfer Entitlement award and fail to transfer, you may lose your eligibility for that grant.  Cal Grant C helps pay for tuition and training costs for vocational courses, to a maximum of $576 per year.

Entitlement Cal Grants (A and B) are guaranteed for every high school senior who has at least a 2.0 GPA, meets the requirement and applies on time - by March 2 of his or her senior year or the year following graduation.  The guarantee extends to high school seniors who attend a California Community College first and meet the requirements when they transfer to a four-year college.  Please note: Students who self certify that they are high school graduates and are awarded an Entitlement Cal Grant may have their awards withdrawn if they do not have a GED or a high school diploma.  Certificates of Proficiency, Ability to Benefit tests, and failure to pass the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) will disqualify you from receiving the Entitlement Cal Grant.

Competitive Cal Grants are similar to Cal grant Entitlement awards except that they aren't guaranteed.  Students who may be Cal Grant-eligible students but who aren't high school seniors or recent graduates may compete for these awards.  There is a limited number of these awards available.  The deadline of March 2 does apply.  A second deadline for California Community College students of September 2 is also available.

Eligibility: Students must be residents of California, demonstrate financial need, must be enrolled at least half time (6.0 units), and maintain certain academic standards.

How to apply: Fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available in the Financial Aid Office or at FAFSA online and submit a certified GPA verification form, available in the Financial Aid Office, to the California Student Aid Commission.  Interested students must apply by March 2nd.  For those students who plan on attending a Community College and haven't applied by March 2nd or were denied a Cal Grant award, an additional deadline date of September 2nd may apply if funds are still available.  Additional information about the Cal Grant can be obtained at the California Student Aid Commission website.

Notification: Eligible students are mailed an award letter from the California Student Aid Commission and the college.

Loans

Loans are Federal financial aid funds that the student repays after completing a program of study or after being enrolled in less than 6 units.  These educational loans have a low interest rate and an extended payment period, making them easier to repay than most non-educational loans.  Loans must be repaid, therefore, Diablo Valley College recommends that students use all other possible resources first and borrow only when it is absolutely necessary.

There are a number of different loans available, namely: Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan; Federal Additional Unsubsidized Stafford Loan; and Federal Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students.  Each of these loans have different interest rates, fees and conditions.

Please refer to the Financial Aid Handbook for more details on these loans and Diablo Valley College's Loan Policy.
