Culinary Summer Camp
The Hospitality and Culinary Industry Summer Camp offers an exciting overview of current and emerging career opportunities in the hospitality and culinary industry. Practice and hands-on application of culinary techniques, skills and knowledge are combined with mini-internships at local hotel properties such as the Crowne Plaza, Hilton Concord or related businesses such as Whole Foods. Sustainability, farm-to-table, urban farming and science in the preparation of food are integrated throughout the five-day long "camp".
Industry participation in the camp included: A visit to the PG&E Food Technology Center (fishnick.com) where engineers, food scientists, technology experts and marketing professionals with experience in the industry have found successful careers. Tom Sharp, a national BBQ competitor provided students first-hand knowledge of the very best techniques, and an industry roundtable brought together a broad scope of professionals from all aspects of the Hospitality Industry.
This dual credit (1 unit of college + 2.5 high school credits) course is a collaborative partnership between Diablo Valley College and the Contra Costa County Regional Occupational Program. The camp is offered in the Hospitality Studies Kitchens, on the DVC Pleasant Hill Campus that offers learning at the highest level.
