Web-based Instruction: Instructor
Activities and Tools
In the chart below, one can get a feel
for the different types of web-based activities that are typical for
college courses. While they range in terms of time investment and
learning curve, all are supported by the Instructional Technology staff
and appointments for the sake of deeper explanations and examples are
available through Neal Skapura at
nskapura@dvc.edu or at extension 2878.

Web-based Activities
|
Web-based Tools
|
|
Level 1 |
- Basic web page that only
requires the instructor/staff to fill-in boxes with information.
- Creation of files can be done in
MSWord and the upload is extremely easy.
|
Web Wizard |
|
Level 2 |
A |
Web page that contains a minimal amount of information and is
primarily for one course. |
FrontPage |
| B |
Discussion board,
online test, email functions, file sharing, small-group online
activities |
WebCt or
Blackboard |
| C |
Web Site that contains
multiple links and serves more then one course and has a link to Web
Ct or Blackboard for the specific uses like an online test, a
discussion board, email functions. |
FrontPage in combination with WebCt or Blackboard |
| D |
Teaching a hybrid or
online course, the instructor would primarily teach to students who
have access to DVC campus services like the learning center,
counseling, etc. |
WebCt or
Blackboard |
|
Level 3 |
- Teaching multiple online
classes, the instructor is teaching to students who primarily do
not come to campus and thus do not have access to many of the
college services.
- Because of these constraints,
the online instructor is charged to work with the
department/learning center to ensure that students have access to
online tutoring, student services, instructor office hours, etc.

WebCt or
Blackboard |
|
Activities in the Level 1 |
Time Investment: 5 minutes to
1hour
|
Activity
|
Tool
|
|
5-minute Web Page |
Web
Wizard
|
|
Sending students to a site to have access to
the following:
instructor information and email address
a link to a website
posting a file: an
assignment, syllabus, image, audio file, pdf, etc.
|
Web
Wizard–adding a file function |
|
Placing a small image on your Web Wizard page |
Web Wizard–adding image function
Using an image editor like Photoshop, scanning
an image, or copying an image from the web and then adding it to
your Web Wizard home page with the “add image function.”
|
Activities in Level 2
|
|
Time
Investment: 2 hours-100 hours + |
|
In Level 2, the activities
may be the same but your program choice should be dependent on activities and
course goals: timed tests, tracking student grades, whether you want your
course to be time-released over the entire
semester. If these are your long-term goals then you should choose
to use Web Ct–which has a greater time buy-in. But if you are
primarily interested in having the students use a discussion board/small
group discussion or want a centralized email system then you will want
to use Blackboard–which has a small time buy-in.
Level 2 has an ascending
learning curve that ultimately tapers off, like a bell curve, when one
reaches level 3. And again, this learning curve is dependant on the
activities and the tool that one uses to accomplish this.
|
|
Level 2A
|
|
Time
Investment–2 hours to 15 hours
|
|
Activity |
Tool |
|
Having a link from a Web Wizard site to a
discussion board and centralized email site |
Using
Web Wizard with WebCt or Blackboard
|
|
Small group or whole class discussions
|
WebCt
or Blackboard |
|
Developing a list of student email addresses
for small/large group discussion
|
WebCt
or Blackboard |
|
A combination of a discussion board/email
address use
|
WebCt
or Blackboard |
Level 2B
|
|
Time
Investment–10 to 25 hours
|
Activity
|
Tool
|
|
Using a template-based web page that has the
look of the
www.dvc.edu site but allows the
instructor to personalize it with: name, department, and course (s).
Once personalized the instructor can upload his/her documents like a
syllabus, assignments, images, links, etc.
|
FrontPage template that is designed by the DVC
web master |
Level 2C
|
|
Time
Investment–dependant on program (5-30 hours)
|
|
Activity |
Tool |
|
A combination of a discussion board/email
address use
|
WebCt
or Blackboard
|
|
A central web page
to be used by an oncampus or online audience who must access one or
more of the following: a syllabus, one or more assignments, an
image, several links, the use of a discussion board/small group
discussions, organized email configurations
|
WebCt
or Blackboard |
|
Developing a hybrid course where students are
oncampus at least once a week but working online during other course
time. This type of site is likely to be updated often with course
material or checked to see what type of posts the students are
making on a discussion board
|
WebCt
or Blackboard |
Level 2 D
Hybrid or Online Course
|
|
Time Investment–75 hours +
|
|
Activity |
Tool |
|
Generating the content for the course and
then uploading it onto a web page like the DVC template or an
instructor-designed page.
|
Generation Program: Word, FrontPage, PowerPoint
Web Program: FrontPage, WebCT, Blackboard
|
|
|
|
Level 3-Multiple
Hybrid or Online Courses
|
|
Time Investment: 100+ Hours
|
|
While level 3 would have a large buy-in (100+
hours) if you were to begin from the beginning, an instructor would
reach this point most likely after moving through levels one and
two. Having done so, he/she would be well-prepared to maintain
more then one course and thus would have many of the skills and
concepts already developed, making for a tapering learning curve. |
