Library Workshops are tailored to the needs of the class to complete a specific library research assignment or to provide an overview of basic library resources to the use of advanced or subject research materials and techniques.  Please review the descriptions of the workshops located below. The sessions have a hands-on component unless you want your students to do their research. Please note:
  • We require a minimum of two week's notice to schedule your class session.
  • You will be contacted to verify date and time and to discuss material to be presented.
  • We request 50 minutes for most sessions and to meet in L202 (Library Lab).
  • Please assess your students research abilities so we can tailor the presentation to their skill level.
  • Please inform students of the exact assignment in advance of the session.

Workshop 1: The Five Basics of Library Research
Learn to navigate the Library's web site; become familiar with library services and collections; find information for an assignment; use ALICE, the online catalog; search an online magazine database..

Workshop 2: Locating Articles in Magazines, Newspapers and Scholarly Journals
Learn to select the appropriate database for a given topic; understand keywords and subject headings; find articles in online databases and printed indexes; compose MLA citations for articles from online databases.

Workshop 3: Techniques for Quick and Effective Internet Searching
Learn to identify and use appropriate Internet search tools to find information about a given topic; compare an online database search with a general web search; evaluate which web sites are appropriate for academic research; compose an MLA citation for a web site.
