REQUIRED COURSES

L100 INTRODUCTION TO A CAREER IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SERVICES    1 Unit
An introduction to the dynamic field of library and information studies for paraprofessionals. This course offers an exploration of the various types of libraries and information centers, the skills necessary for a successful career in the field, and the job opportunities in libraries and information centers.

L103 ACCESS TO LIBRARY MATERIALS    2 Units
This course will provide training and skills in library procedures for providing access to library materials; circulation, reserves, special collections, serials, media, interlibrary loan, and security issues.

L104 CATALOGING FOR PARAPROFESSIONALS    3 Units
An introductory course on library procedures for description and organization of print and non-print materials for either manual or automated catalogs. Intended for library assistants and those interested in working in this field.

L105 REFERENCE FOR PARAPROFESSIONALS: TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES     3 Units
An introduction to the basic tools employed in the conduct of reference work in public, school and academic libraries and to the tools used to assist library patrons in finding information and/or books and other library materials.

L108 ACQUISITION OF LIBRARY MATERIALS    1 Unit
Library practices dealing with ordering and receiving materials. Covers use of automation in these areas.

LS121 INFORMATION COMPETENCY AND RESEARCH SKILLS    1 Unit
This course teaches the research strategies and skills for successfully finding, retrieving, evaluating and using information in all formats.  It combines library skills, research methods, and information technology literacy.  Coursework includes the ethical and legal aspects of information use and the critical thinking skills necessary for successful college research.

COOP170 or 170A OCCUPATIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE IN LIBRARY AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY    2 Units
Prerequisite: Completion of L100, L104, and L108 or approval of instructor.

Certificate of Achievement - Library and Information Technology

This certificate program prepares students for employment in the dynamic field of library and information services.  The skills learned in this program may be used in public, school, academic, and corporate libraries, as well as in other jobs or businesses requiring information management skills.  If you like working with people, books and information, consider a career in library and information technology.

To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each course used to meet a certificate requirement with a "C" grade or better and maintain an overall GPA of 2.5.  Required classes are available online, in the evening and some are offered in the day.  Other electives and course substitutions not listed below are possible with department chairperson approval.

Associate in Science Degree - Library and Information Technology

This associate in science degree in library and information technology prepares students for employment in the dynamic field of library and information services.  The skills learned in this program may be used in public, school, academic, and corporate libraries, as well as in other positions requiring information management skills.  If you like working with people, books and information, consider a career in library and information technology.

To earn the degree, students must complete each course used to meet a major requirement with a "C" grade or better and maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or better in the coursework required for the major.  Required classes are available online, in the evening, and some are offered in the day.  Certain courses may satisfy both a major and a DVC general education requirement; however the units are only counted once.  Other electives and course substitutions not listed below are possible with department chairperson approval.
