Machine Technology

Machine Technology CollageMachinists are highly skilled individuals who produce precision parts used in all sectors of manufacturing. The machinist is the key person who works from engineering drawings to saw, mill, turn, drill, grind and shape parts to the required specifications.  The parts produced with manual and automated machines are used by medical, aerospace, computer, automotive and almost every other industry.

The Diablo Valley College machine technology program prepares each student for entry-level employment as a machinist in a metalworking occupation.

Machine technology students gain an in-depth understanding of the machine process from start to finish. They learn about:

  • blueprint reading

  • elementary engineering drawing

  • CAD drafting

  • personal computer software applications

  • the machine process

  • production grinding practices

  • CAM - computer assisted machine

  • computer numerical control

  • math for technicians

  • geometry

  • elementary physics

Students gain experience with the hands-on operation of standard machine tools used in the industry such as the:

  • drill press

  • lathes

  • milling machines

  • metal saws

  • surface grinders

Students can choose a specialty, such as computer numerical control (CNC) programming or operating, quality control, or students may train to become all-around machinists.

What will I learn through the machine technology certificate program?

This program is designed for three categories of students: those wishing to enter the metal machining industry, those wishing to become an apprentice machinist or mechanical technician in research and development, and those wishing to transfer to four-year institutions and obtain a degree in mechanical engineering, tool design engineering, manufacturing engineering, metallurgy, or manufacturing processes.

To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each of the required courses with a grade point average 2.5 or better. Required courses are available in the day and some during the evening. Students may also earn an associate in arts degree. See the A.A. degree requirements listed in the “Transfer and DVC degrees” section of the catalog.
