The accounting program prepares students for entry-level employment in almost any industry.

The certificate of achievement program provides excellent development of a student's critical thinking, problem solving and business judgment skills through an integrated broad program that combines research, real-world perspective, oral and written communication, current events, team projects, and computer applications.

What will I learn through the accounting program?

Students will develop the knowledge and skills required of an accountant: compiling and analyzing business records and preparing financial reports such as income statements, balance sheets, cost studies, and tax reports.

To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each of the required courses with a grade of “C” or better. Course requirements are available in the evening and on weekends. Some are also available in the day. At least 25 percent of the units must have been completed at DVC. Requests for course substitution are made to the accounting and information management department chairperson.

Management Studies

Managers are organizational leaders, decision makers and activity coordinators. Strong management skills are essential in nearly every business environment for the successful selection and education of personnel, the regulation of workflow, planning and the allocation of resources.

Management decisions are affected by political, social and economic concerns. Making these complex decisions on a daily basis is challenging. The job of the manager is to consider all these concerns and make decisions for the benefit of the company, customers, other employees and society.

The Diablo Valley College management studies program benefits students preparing to become managers and supervisors; it is also valuable for persons already holding these positions.

As a student of the management studies program, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of business management through studying:

The certificate of achievement program is designed to establish a solid foundation in all phases of management for gaining an entry-level supervisory or management position.

Office Professional

Diablo Valley College's office professional program is offered by the DVC Business Division and approved by the Mt. Diablo Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). The program prepares students for a wide variety of entry-level office support positions.

As a student in the office professional program, you will learn:

  • basic computer literacy (MS Office applications)
  • keyboarding and ten-key with speed and accuracy
  • business math
  • business English
  • business communications
  • applied accounting
  • records management
  • office procedures


In addition to these technical skills, you will develop the "soft" skills that are important in an office environment such as punctuality, responsibility, time management, organizational skills, work ethics, teamwork and positive work attitude.

The required courses will prepare you to perform well in any office environment while the elective courses will allow you to pursue areas of
specialization such as legal, medical, accounting, marketing, graphic design or management.

Real Estate

The real estate profession includes the many individuals who are involved in the process of the sale of real property. The Diablo Valley College real estate certificate program is designed to prepare students for a variety of career in real estate, advance the careers of those already employed in the field or to provide knowledge for the consumer/investor who would like to become better informed.

As a student of the real estate program, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the profession though studying many of the following topics:

There are several different programs of study at Diablo Valley College for both the real estate professional and for the consumer/investor. The certificate of achievement program is designed to establish a solid foundation in all phases of real estate. Two additional programs, real estate salesperson's license and real estate broker's license, are designed to prepare students who are planning to take their license exams.

After a student has completed the appropriate coursework, he or she is eligible to take either the Real Estate Salesperson Exam or the Real Estate Broker Exam given by the California Department of Real Estate. There required examinations are not offered at the Diablo Valley College campus.

Small Business Management Program

The Diablo Valley College small business management program is designed to prepare students for planning, organizing, and operating a small to mid-size business in manufacturing, wholesaling, retailing or service trade.

The main focus of the program is on managerial decision making under conditions of uncertainty and fierce competition. Courses involve studying case histories of decision-making issues. Business and management games are used to simulate the complicated interrelationships of various businesses.

As a student of the small business management program, you will learn:

  • how to develop a business plan
  • how to develop a marketing plan
  • how to analyze financial resources
  • how to allocate financial resources
  • business procedures from startup to selling a business
  • general accounting principles
  • general legal principals and how they apply to business
  • group dynamics and leadership


The certificate of achievement program is designed to establish a solid foundation in all phases of small business management. Students with a certificate of achievement will gain the necessary knowledge and skills to operate their own small businesses or handle a broad range of management responsibilities in a small firm.
