GETTING STARTED
Welcome to DVC!
DVC is proud to be among the top California community colleges in transferring students to the University of California, California State University and private four-year universities. In fact, DVC is one of the top transfer schools in the state.
Below are the main steps to enrolling in our campus:
- Sign up for English and math assessment testing
- Step 2 - Take the Assessment Test
To assist you in planning your math and English courses, participate in the assessment process. This information will help you make decisions for the most appropriate courses to meet your individual educational goals.
- Financial Assistance
- Step 3 - Apply for Financial Aid, Scholarships and/or Extended Opportunity Program and Services (EOPS) for financial assistance.
- Transcripts
- Step 4 - Submit Official Transcripts -Send official high school and college transcripts to provide proof of prerequisite completion. For students with college transcripts, you may then schedule an appointment with a counselor to determine which courses can be applied to meet degree, certificate or transfer requirements.
- Register for Orientation & Advisement Counseling
- Step 5 - Counseling 095 - Orientation to College
- New students who have completed fewer than 12 college units are strongly encouraged to register for Counseling 105. Classes meet once or twice for a total of six hours and after completing the course, students are given a priority registration appointment. Students must complete the math and English assessments at least 10 working days before the Counseling 105 course begins.
- Returning and new transfer students (with more than 12 college courses) should speak with a counselor to discuss their current educational goals or plans. Official transcripts must be on file in the Admissions Office at least two weeks prior to scheduling a counseling appointment.
- Register for Classes
- Step 6 - Priority registration are assigned to all students who are currently enrolled at DVC or have completed Counseling 105
Priority registration appointments are for online and telephone registration only.
TO ADD A CLASS:

- Your DVC Admissions Application must be on file. If you are new or returning you can apply online. Continuing students do not need to reapply.
- Login to Web Advisor to obtain your registration appointment.
You may register online or by telephone on or after your registration appointment date and time.
TO DROP A CLASS:

- You must drop a class on or before the deadline date. See the academic calendar for drop dates for full-term classes or ask you instructor for the drop dates if you are enrolled in a short-term class.
- You may drop a class on or before the deadline date as follows: You may drop a class Online by going through Web Advisor or by telephone.
- You may also drop a class in person at the Admissions Office.
- NOTE: You must properly withdraw from a class before the refund deadline to avoid owing the registration fees. Non-attendance will not result in your withdrawal from the class. It is the student's responsibility to official drop their class.

- Pay fees
- Step 7 - Payment of registration fees canb e made by credit card when registering by phone or online. The Cashier's Office will accept payments by cash, credit card, check, or money order.
- DVC ID Card
- Step 8 - After registering for classes, print out your course schedule and take a copyalong with a picture ID to the Student Life Office in teh Student Union to obtain your DVC "Connect Card" student ID. This free card is required to use the library and/or printers on campus.
Counselor Tips for Choosing Classes Your First Semester
- Balance class and work hours
- Don't over load yourself with too many units your first semester
- Begin English and math classes your first semester (whenever possible)
- Good communication skills (reading, writing, speaking) and math are important foundation skills for succeeding in most college courses and careers
- English and math are required for all associate and bachelor's degrees
- Enroll in classes that interest you
- Read course descriptions online, in the class schedule, or the College Catalog.
- Talk to other students, counselors, and instructors about classes to match your interests.
- Actively exploring your interests can lead to increased motivation and more satisfying educational and career choices.
- Take General Education courses toward one of the following general goals:
- AA/AS Degree General Education Requirements
- California State University General Education Requirements ( for CSU transfer)
- Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC)
- Begin Taking Courses Toward Your Major/AA/AS Degree/Certificate
- Some ‘high unit' majors have many required courses that should be begun as soon as possible. ‘High unit' majors include Engineering, Sciences, Computer Science, Architecture
- Many transfer major requirements can be found at Assist.org
- Certificate programs require courses in the major only (no general education)
- Enroll in College Study Skills and/or Career Classes
