Early childhood education students gain interpersonal relationship skills with children, families and colleagues. Through supervised teaching experiences, students develop the skills needed to set up a safe, healthy and stimulating environment that emphasizes good nutrition and provides opportunities for the children to engage in developmentally appropriate active play, quiet play and rest. Students learn to observe children's behaviors, develop activities based on each individual child's needs and interests, and plan for a responsive and challenging curriculum.

How long will it take to earn a certificate/degree?
Generally, students take two years to complete an Associate degree and the courses required for the certificate. The length of time will vary depending on the individual student's goals and the certificates desired.
What will I learn through this certificate program?
This certificate prepares students to meet the demands of today's child care centers, preschool programs, and nursery schools. The certificates meet the California State Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing, Title 22, Division 12 requirements for a fully qualified teacher. The Early Childhood Education Basic Certificate is an alternative certificate to the California State Matrix and to the Child Development Certificate.
To earn a certificate of achievement, students must complete each of the required courses with a grade of "C" or better. Attending classes in the day, the evening, or both can complete course requirements.
