The Puente program is a one-year pre-transfer program open to all students who meet the eligibility criteria. The content of the course focuses on Mexican American/Latino authors and issues. All students are required to participate in all course and project activities, counseling, and mentoring.
The program is based on three components that work together: English instruction, counseling, and mentoring. English 118 and 122 help students with their writing skills, while counselors help with devising career options, developing an academic plan, and identifying long term goals. Mentors from the business or professional community bring their personal, academic and career experience to the students.
Since its founding in 1981, Puente has expanded to 54 community colleges with Puente programs throughout the state, including DVC. Studies indicate that community colleges with Puente programs transfer 44% more Latino students to the University of California than colleges without Puente.
