    Library workshops:

    Library workshops may be scheduled during a regular class meeting time. All workshops take place in L202, the library computer lab. Librarians will customize library workshops to focus on your specific assignments and/or course objectives.

    • We require a minimum of two week's notice to schedule your library workshop.
    • We will need at least 50 minutes of class time for a library workshop.
    • Please assess your students' research abilities so we can tailor the presentation to their skill level.
    • Please inform students of your exact assignment in advance of the library workshop.
    • You will be contacted by the assigned library instructor to verify date and time of library workshop and to discuss specific instruction needs, your assignment, and presentation details.
    • We invite you to assign the library's online tutorial, Searchpath, in preparation for the library workshop.

    Course reserve collection:

    You may put your own personal copies of printed materials or library books and e-books on Reserve for 3-hour, 1-day, 2-day or 1-week circulation. Please do this in advance of the class as it takes one week for processing.  Fill out the Reserve Materials Request Form and bring or send it with any personal copies to the library assistant listed above. Your DVC or SRC list of items will appear in ALICE under both your name and under the course number.

    Reference staff:

    Librarians are available for assistance in using the library. Research assistance provided at the reference desk includes help locating reference books and print periodicals, understanding the Library of Congress call numbers, and searching the online catalog ALICE, the electronic databases and the internet searching.

    Online resources:

    From the library homepage, use the Research section to find e-Books in the online catalog, full-text magazine and journal articles from online databases, and research guides.

     

    Online research guides:

    The librarians maintain online copies of research guides such as Preparing a Work Cited List: MLA Style or Evaluating Internet Resources.

     

    Resources for assignments:

    Discuss with librarians the availability or adequacy of library resources before making assignments or developing reading lists which require the use of library materials.

    Information competency and literacy G.E. requirements:

    The Library offers LS 121: Information Literacy and Research Skills, an online or hybrid one-unit course which fulfills the G.E. area VII information literacy requirement for the A.A. degree. Contact Andy Kivel (ext. 2170) to explore ways this requirement can be integrated into courses in various departments.
