Self-paced math program

About the Self-Paced Mathematics Program

The DVC Self-Paced Mathematics Program lets students learn math on their own at a flexible pace, within certain deadlines. Instead of regularly scheduled lectures, students learn math with the help of a variety of resources: an interactive online math program, the instructor and aides, and the textbook. The online program lets students repeat homework with immediate feedback until they have mastered the material. It also gives students explanations, sample problems, videos, powerpoints and animations. Once a student has demonstrated mastery of a set of material (including passing an in-class written exam), they move on to the next set of material.

The main difference between Self-Paced Mathematics courses and lecture courses is that self-paced allows students to take one class over multiple semesters, or to take multiple classes in one semester. As soon as a student complete one class, they can immediate begin working on the next SP class. If a student completes the first class in the first four weeks of the semester, they can actually enroll in the second class and have both classes on their transcript.

There are many different types of students that enroll in self-paced math. Some examples are: student that don’t have time in their schedule for a full-length class; those that just need a little review and go quickly though the material; students that need a slower pace than lecture classes; students that don’t learn well in the lecture environment. The successful students in self-paced math are self-motivated, are comfortable using computers and working online, and are dedicated to putting in at least ten hours a week.
