Students who have earned a certificate of achievement in athletic coaching are prepared for an entry-level position as a youth or high school coach.

Why study Fitness Instruction/Personal Training program?

Those who work in the filed of fitness instruction and personal training enjoy an exciting and dynamic career working with people who depend on the help and support of a highly trained fitness professional to achieve their personal fitness goals. Most personal trainers are employed by health clubs and gyms, although many personal trainers own their own businesses working out of their homes or the homes of their clients. This program is designed for students who are interested in a career in the fitness industry and offers two overlapping courses of study. The certificate program is a 21 unit curriculum that prepares students for entry-level employment as a personal trainer. The A.S. degree program is a 60 unit curriculum that prepares students to transfer to a four-year school, to continue their training for a career as a:

  • strength and conditioning coach
  • college instructor
  • exercise scientist


Students who have earned an associate degree at DVC are highly qualified to transfer and have a strong competitive advantage in the admissions process at an accredited four-year program. Completion of the certificate or associate in science degree program will prepare students to sit for a national personal training certificate examination such as those offered by the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). According to a recent survey, a beginning hourly rate for a personal trainer in the San Francisco Bay Area is $15 - $33 per hour and a more experienced trainer can make considerably more. A personal trainer who owns his or her own business can earn a six-figure income.

Why study Sports Medicine / Athletic Training?

Those who work in the field of sports medicine enjoy an exciting and dynamic career working with athletes who depend upon the help and support of a highly trained health care professional to achieve their athletic goals.

Diablo Valley College offers two brand-new, state-of-the-art facilities (classroom and clinic) and offers students hands-on experience with 17 intercollegiate sports. Students are provided the opportunity to observe various health care professionals including physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physician assistants and podiatrists. Classroom instruction includes lecture by practicing physicians, certified athletic trainers, and therapists from throughout the bay area.

The DVC program offers a low student/teacher ratio, especially in the clinical settings where students can apply what they've learned in class later the same day!
