| This course surveys the history of Latin America during the National Period (from independence to the present), considering the legacies of conquest and 300 years of Spanish colonialism. Latin American political, economic, social and cultural development during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries is examined using specific countries and regions as case studies. The course explores how geography, the encounter between pre-Columbian cultures and Spanish/Portuguese colonialism, the introduction of African slavery, and the movements for independence shaped Latin America and its inhabitants.
