Student Profiles
Miguel
Hinojosa, 21, came to the U.S. from Michoacan, Mexico in 1993. “My
goals include Transferring
into a four year college and obtaining a Master’s degree in
international business and finance.
Miguel credits both
the EOPS and Puente
programs with the positive experience he’s had at DVC.
“EOPS’ Summer Institute offered a great college orientation and gave
me the opportunity to make connections with DVC faculty.
Puente
provided me with the skills that I needed to pursue and achieve my
goals. Puente’s English classes and mentor program were key in my
success. My Puente mentor, Allan Lacayo, is my role model and the key
motivator for my continued educational achievements.” Miguel
recommends DVC because of its excellent educational programs, faculty
and student services.
Damien
Chong,
23, found out about DVC while living in Malaysia.
“I am currently enrolled in Engineering
courses while experiencing the wonderful cultural diversity DVC has to
offer.
DVC’s instructors and counselors
have been very helpful in guiding me towards my educational goals.
And for these reasons I feel grateful to be a student here.”
Yolanda
Diaz, 32, is one of the winners of the new Gates Millennium
Scholarship, which will cover costs of tuition, living expenses and
books while she completes four years of medical school. Yolanda
successfully participated in the PUENTE
program at DVC before transferring to
UC Davis. Yolanda plans to be a doctor specializing in either
oncology or geriatrics.
“Attending
the
San Ramon Valley Center (formerly CHE) for the past
three semesters has been good for me. The smaller classes and
dedicated instructors who willingly work with students as individuals
have strengthened my academic abilities and increased my confidence. I
know I will be successful at Washington State University, where I am
transferring in the fall."
