Student Learning Outcomes
|
The success of an effective
assessment of student learning outcomes must be anchored in an ongoing
planning and evaluation process that takes into consideration the use of
assessment results to improve programs, services and operations. The process
of "closing the loop" or use of results is crucial to the success of the
assessment program. Final Report to the Diablo Valley College Senate,
Teaching Strategies/Learning Outcomes Task Force, 4/29/03. |

Focus on
Dialogue
"Groups engaged in dialogue develop
greater insights, shared meanings and ultimately, collective understanding of
complex issues and how best to address them."
(ACCJC Guide to Evaluating
Institutions, August 2004.)
In Spring 2006, DVC held weekly "Pizza Fridays" to
encourage open dialogue among faculty, staff, and administrators in implementing
Student Learning Outcomes. Attendees included individuals and teams from both
the Diablo Valley Campus and the San Ramon Valley Campus, with a representation
of 32 departments and student service areas.
Individuals and teams met to discuss the theory behind SLOs, as
well as to develop their own course or program SLOs with corresponding
assessment methods and criteria. Dialogue was passionate, theoretical at times,
and, overall, productive.
