| About the
Respiratory
Therapy Degree
What can I do with an Associate Degree in respiratory therapy? Respiratory care practitioners work in life saving and supporting situations with physicians, nurses, and other members of the health care team. Employment opportunities exist in both traditional and non-traditional work settings including: acute care hospitals and clinics, skilled nursing facilities, home care environments, medical equipment companies, and management and educational roles. Diablo Valley College and Ohlone College provide the opportunity for graduates of this program to take the advanced and nationally recognized exams to become a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). How long does it take to earn a certificate? This program takes a minimum of two years to complete and cannot be accelerated, even by those already holding advanced degrees. The program will also admit students who would like to complete the requirements on a part-time basis. Are there any additional costs associated with the program? Once admitted to the
program, a uniform purchase is required. RT students also need purchase
approximately $100 of miscellaneous supplies. The required books
throughout the two years cost about $700. Self assessment exams, costing
approximately $150 are required in the last semester. License application
and exam in the last semester, is currently approximately $650. Students
must also have reliable transportation to complete their hospital courses. How do I apply for the program? Applications are accepted each spring semester from March 1 to May 15. You may request an application as early as January. It is recommended you research this profession before applying and leave adequate time to take the prerequisite classes: college English, Algebra and Chemistry. For those who have not taken any previous college courses in English and Algebra, assessment tests, which evaluate English and Math ability, are required. For those who have taken the prerequisites, chances for enrollment into the program are good. For those who have taken any of the science requirements of the program, chances of acceptance are excellent.
