Nurses are vital to our healthcare system and share an important role in health education, disease prevention, illness and long-term care and saving lives. Diablo Valley College offers prerequisite courses within the health sciences department to prepare students for a career path in nursing. Nursing programs are highly competitive, so we recommend students complete the following prerequisite coursework, with a 3.0 GPA.

  • Human Anatomy BIOSC 139
  • Human Physiology BIOSC 140
  • Microbiology BIOSC 119 or 146
  • General Psychology PSYCH 101

Student success story

Regina Porras Carlos had a difficult start to her college endeavors, but with the guidance of DVC transfer services, she completed her pre-requisite courses at DVC and was able to transfer to Mills College in 2008 to complete a pre-nursing program. She went on to the Samuel Merritt University Nursing program in 2009 and fulfilled her dream and graduated with a B.S. in nursing. Nursing programs available at Los Medanos College

Our affiliate college Los Medanos, in East Contra Costa County, offers two nursing programs:

  • The Vocational Nursing Program;
  • The Registered Nursing Program, which includes an LVN to RN option.

Graduates completing the Registered Nursing Program will receive an Associate In Science Degree in Nursing and qualify to take the State Board Examination (NCLEX-RN) for licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).
