English Assessment

If you are enrolling in an English class for the summer 2019 session then the English assessment is required. There are two sections to this assessment, reading comprehension and WritePlacer®. These assessments will place you in the most appropriate reading and writing classes for you to be successful at DVC.

English assessment details

Assessment type: multiple choice; essay
Assessment sections: reading comprehension; WritePlacer®
Questions: reading comprehension (20 questions) WritePlacer® (300-600 word essay, or 20 questions)
Time limit: 1.5 hours total; 40 minute time limit for essay section
Re-assessment policy: The English and ESL assessments may be taken twice during the first testing semester, with at least seven days in between assessments, and once per semester thereafter.

Do I have to take the English assessment?

  • If English is not your first language, please visit ESL assessment
  • Students may not be required to take the assessment if they have: 
      • taken English 116/118/117/117A and passed with a “C” or higher,
      • completed an associate degree or higher,
      • taken the assessment at DVC or any other California Community College within the last two years,
      • completed a college level English course at another college and passed with a “C” or higher,
      • taken the English Literature or Language Advanced Placement exam and scored a "3" or higher,
      • taken the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) and received “standard exceeded.”

English assessment practice questions

The English assessment practice questions includes ten reading comprehension sample questions, and one sample writing topic. There are also WriterPlacer® sample essays you can review to get a better understanding of what is considered a well written essay. 

How do I get my assessment/placement results?

Your placement results will be available online on InSite within 24 business hours of completing the assessment. The online placement results (formerly Multiple Measures) will be available in your student record after 24 business hours.

  • Click on INSITE (or https://m.4cd.edu)
  • Log in with your user ID and password
  • Click on Plan-Progress tile
  • Click on Assessment Scores 
  • Click on Test Summary
