December 7, 2020:  Reflect on your semester and set goals for spring

Accessibility Goal of the Week

The abrupt switch to fully online education brought the concept of accessibility front and center, creating both an opportunity and a significant challenge.  It is our hope that these Goals of the Week have helped ease the challenges in some way.

With fall semester waning, now is a good time to take stock of the progress you've made in creating accessible course content. Congratulate yourself for any changes made that have improved the student experience.  At the same time, do not be discouraged if you were not able to implement all the things you set out to do.  Even a little progress is better than complete inaction. As Mark Twain is believed to have said, "Continuous improvement is better than delayed perfection".

As we turn our thoughts to planning our spring courses, let's strive to focus on the "opportunity" aspect of online accessibility and set new, attainable goals to continually improve.

Here are some sample goals to help get you thinking:

  • Identify one aspect of a course that seems tricky to "accessibilize" and reach out for assistance (i.e. a particular assignment, or project that may pose barriers for students with certain disabilities).
  • Complete a certain number of Goals of the Week (perhaps all of them!).
  • Move through a certain number of self-paced modules on the Online Accessibility at DVC website
  • Sign up to complete a Digital Access Clinic and have part of your course evaluated for accessibility.

Goals of the Week will continue at the start of spring semester, so have a restful break and thank you for your efforts!
