Safe Spaces

The Safe Spaces Action Team (which was a sub-group of the Racial Justice Task Force) will continue as a work group reporting to the College Council through the 2019-20 academic year. The Safe Spaces Action Team is committed to increasing the number and quality of spaces on campus where students of color feel welcomed, engaged, supported, recognized, validated, encouraged, and comfortable. Safe spaces include both physical and emotional spaces, including the spaces we create through our language, syllabi, classrooms, etc. This team is currently a work group that will be making recommendations to the College Council.

In fall 2019, Emily Stone, and vice president of student services, Newin Orante will be working with Student Government to transform the Multicultural Center into a more inclusive space that is a more inviting Safe Space for students. We will also integrate the conversation of Safe Spaces and indoor and outdoor cameras into the college Facility Master Plan process, which is occurring during the fall term.

With the hiring of a new Vice President of Business Services in January, we will integrate the facility aspects of Safe Spaces into a broader Facilities Committee discussion.

Individuals interested in addressing college wide Safe Spaces, please contact Heidi Goen-Salter, Lisa Gwyn, Azim Khan, or Emily Stone. All interested individuals are encouraged to show up and participate in college committees regardless of whether you are an official committee member or not.
