San Ramon Campus Improvements

Rendering of SRC campusNew construction, renovation and repurposing

Students taking classes at the San Ramon campus have not benefited from the same conveniences, services, and learning environment as their fellow Pleasant Hill campus students. Food services, expanded book store, and more specialized learning spaces were at the top of the list to make the San Ramon student experience more equitable.

The new building at the San Ramon campus will house a new library/ learning center and tutorial spaces.

Construction timelines and updates:

UPDATE: October 21, 2020

This renovation and expansion project will provide students with new indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, a new café, classrooms, and science laboratory spaces. The addition of the new library and academic support center building will provide an opportunity for students to fully engage with all the available resources on campus.

Increment 1: This first construction phase included renovation of the existing classrooms, tutorial spaces, anatomy and physiology lab spaces, art lab, and student gathering spaces. The newly renovated spaces are now complete and available for college use. This first increment is in the final close out phase.

Increment 2: This first construction phase includes the building of a new library and academic support center, renovation of the Learning Commons, and a new café. The contractor made significant progress over the summer and currently the building is nearly ready for the interior finishes. The glass window installation was completed in September and the site utilities connections are nearly complete. The Café and Learning Commons renovation is well underway with about 95% of the framework complete.  Overall, the project is on schedule for occupancy in spring 2021.

Note: Impact to the flow of foot traffic on the San Ramon campus continues. Alternate routes are clearly communicated at all times. Please watch for updates.

UPDATE: January 28, 2020

This renovation and expansion project will provide students with new indoor and outdoor gathering spaces, a new café, classrooms, and science laboratory spaces. The addition of the new library and academic support center building will provide an opportunity for students to fully engage with all the available resources on campus.

Increment 1: This first construction phase includes renovation of the existing classrooms, tutorial spaces, anatomy and physiology lab spaces, art lab, and student gathering spaces. Parking lot ADA improvements are also included. The newly renovated lab spaces (229 and 229A)  and all other scheduled classroom spaces were substantially completed in time for the start of spring term.

Increment 2: This first construction phase includes construction of a new library and academic support center, renovation of the Learning Commons, and a new café. The water fountain has been removed, allowing for the necessary site work to begin. The new contractor is onsite and construction is in progress.

Note: Impact to the flow of foot traffic on the San Ramon campus continues. Alternate routes are clearly communicated at all times. Please watch for updates.

UPDATE: October 3, 2019

Increment 1: This work is now approximately half way complete as several existing classroom renovation efforts are starting to wrap up. SRC now has updated classrooms and a student services computer lab space all with new finishes. The remainder of this increment will focus on science lab spaces, furnishings for the administration lobby, and student gathering areas.

Increment 2: The bidding process is complete, a construction contract has been awarded and preconstruction efforts are proceeding. This work will include existing fountain removal, site development, new construction of the 6,000 square foot library/academic support center, and the renovation of the learning commons to include a new café and bookstore services. The new building will create a welcoming front entrance for our students and the community.

A ground-breaking ceremony to kick off the construction of this project will be scheduled near the end of October or early November.

UPDATE: May 20, 2019

Increment 1: includes renovation of existing classrooms, tutoring spaces, anatomy and physiology lab spaces, art lab, and student gathering spaces.

The contract was awarded in late January and major work is underway with room W148, Reading and Writing Center, as the first remodel. The work in the East wing will follow this summer and will include expanding room E164 and repurposing existing space to create a new Anatomy-Physiology Lab. The Bookstore will be relocated into the current Math-Science Tutoring Lab, which will be relocated to rooms W204/205. Other minor remodels will also be included in this first increment.

Ongoing work is expected to continue through summer and into the fall 2019 term.

UPDATE: January 20, 2019

Increment 1: includes renovation of the existing classrooms, tutorial spaces, anatomy and physiology lab spaces, art lab, and student gathering spaces.

Bids were received on January 4, 2019 and are on schedule for Board approval in January. In preparation, the Read-Study area will be temporarily relocated into the Assessment Lab, Room 164. Contractor mobilization and increased activity on the San Ramon Campus is expected early February 2019.

 UPDATE: November 2018

The City of San Ramon, DVC, and the district agreed to the removal of the fountain, which was an important step in ensuring the location of the new building. Design is progressing for two incremental construction phases.

Increment 1: includes renovation of the existing classrooms, tutorial spaces, anatomy and physiology lab spaces, art lab, and student gathering spaces.

  • Construction design drawings were submitted to the Division of the State Architect (DSA) at the end of June and approved in October; the bidding process is underway with bid openings in December 2018.
  • Construction is scheduled to begin in February 2019.

Increment 2: includes fountain removal, site development, new construction of the 6,000 square foot library/learning resource center, and the renovation of the learning commons to include a new café. The new building will create a welcoming front entrance for our students and the community.

  • Increment 2 is half-way through the construction design phase and is on schedule for submittal to the DSA by the end of 2018.
  • User groups concluded their review in September and the Executive Steering Committee (ESC) reviewed the construction design documents and updated estimates in October.
  • Anticipated start of construction is in early fall 2019. Construction will be phased to minimize impacts on the campus as much as possible.

Total project budget: $11.6M

Timeline: 80% progress toward ground breaking for Increment 1; 50% progress toward ground breaking for Increment 2

UPDATE: June 12, 2018

We've explored several preliminary design options and also engaged in a closer review of our students use of library/learning center (tutorial) spaces. Preliminary discussions with the City of San Ramon are scheduled for June to address the removal of the fountain. Should the removal move forward, we will explore value-added library/learning center spaces to provide optimal student and community use.

The project has been split into two phases and the first phase (renovation of the existing labs, classrooms and student spaces) is scheduled to go out to bid early fall.

Current approximate cost: $11.5 M

Timeline: 55% progress toward ground-breaking

UPDATE: February 22, 2018

We are still exploring: the removal of the fountain to better meet student and community needs and to model a more sustainable landscape, and the potential reconfiguring of studio labs and classroom spaces.

Current approximate cost: $11.5 M

Timeline: 50% progress toward ground-breaking
