Have you been laid off from a job? The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity (WIOA) Grant can help you train for a new career!
DVC offers programs to help you get retrained and back to work. And if you lost your job (furloughed) or had your hours reduced, you may qualify for assistance through the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA).
WIOA helps Americans, including youth, laid off and/or furloughed workers, homeless, and those with significant barriers to employment train for high skill quality jobs and careers. This legislation also benefits employers seeking to hire and retain skilled workers.
If you’ve been out of work and think that changing careers or building job skills could increase your learning potential, WIOA may be able to help you pay for tuition, books, tools, school supplies, uniforms, and more through the WIOA Grant.
-
The WIOA Grant is a federally-funded program offered through the Department of Labor. The funds help dislocated workers and adults with significant employment barriers train to enter or re-enter the job market.
If you qualify for the WIOA grant, you can receive up to $5,000 in funding to cover tuition, textbooks, required tools, and fees. WIOA grant funds are applied after other scholarships and grants are utilized, so those who qualify are encouraged to apply.
-
If you are a dislocated worker OR are an income-eligible adult, you may be eligible. Review the criteria for qualifying through either pathway:
Dislocated Workers
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must be a citizen or noncitizen authorized to work in the United States.
- You must be a worker who has lost your job through no fault of your own. Example situations could include lay-off, reduction of hours, displaced homemaker, self-employed person who lost income due to economic conditions, etc. There are no income restrictions for dislocated workers.
Income-eligible Adults
- Must be underemployed with household income equal to or less than the current income guidelines.
- Must be either a current recipient of benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program OR you must be able to provide documentation that verifies you meet income guidelines.
-
- If you believe you may be eligible for the WIOA Grant, contact a local workforce development office (also known as an American Job Center) to set up an appointment to confirm you qualify to receive WIOA Grant funds.
-
- To receive WIOA grant funds, students must enroll in a degree or certificate program that is considered to be “in demand” by area employers.
- DVC offers numerous programs that meet this requirement. To find out if DVC offers a qualifying academic program that interests you, visit CalJOBS and click on "Access California's ETPL and Apprenticeship Providers."
-
- Make an appointment with an academic counselor at DVC.
- Identify yourself as a WIOA or TAA participant and obtain a course education plan with a DVC education counselor.
- Forward the education plan to the DVC WIOA program coordinator, Robin Heinemann.
- Once your participation has been finalized and approved, you can register for classes.
-
- Once you have been approved as a WIOA Grant recipient, search the DVC online schedule for classes related to your academic program.
- After finding the classes you would like to take, go directly to InSite to enroll.
