For Jordan Davis DVC Felt Like Home The Moment He Stepped On Campus

  • August 8, 2023

Jordan Davis explored multiple community colleges before choosing Diablo Valley College. It was a meeting with football coach Mike Darr, that convinced Jordan that DVC was the right place to achieve his goals. “When he told me to come meet him at the school it felt like home from the moment I stepped on campus.”

Pursuing his passion for football, Jordan became a student athlete at DVC and is earning an Associate in Arts for Transfer degree in political science. He hopes to transfer to either Bowie State University or Howard University to become an attorney. “I chose my major because I have grown up around multiple important people in my life that have been in and out of the system. When I sat in the courtroom, I believed that my family members were not being represented in the best way they could have been. I vowed to myself to make sure that will never happen to anyone I am allowed the opportunity to represent.”

Jordan says although he deals with academic challenges, he’s working at becoming a better college student. He’s found the guidance and support systems needed to help him excel and find a sense of community through DVC’s Tembo Leaders and Umoja programs. Both communities support African American students academically and foster deeper connections that support student growth and success.

“The Tembo Leaders and Umoja programs have helped me because they have allowed me to find my tribe and my people. And it has allowed me to learn and understand people in different walks of life.”

He credits DVC faculty Douglas Phenix, Eric Handy, and Dr. Matthew Powell for their mentorship and encouragement. “I am passionate about pushing myself to be the best man and individual I can be.”

Jordan additionally appreciates the support he’s received in the classroom and on campus. “I feel that the faculty here really care about you as a student, and they show it day in and day out with their commendable programs on campus from the Student Centers to the Academic Support Center.”

What does Jordan want to share with high school graduates considering DVC? “I believe DVC is a great fit for any hardworking individual, and it will forever change your life. There are bonds that I have created here that will never go away.”
