DVC graduate Mariano Salvador knows what it means to get a second chance - and to make the most of it.
As a high school senior, Stephanie Ramos Navarro had no idea what she wanted out of life. She was certain that she wanted to pursue an education but was unclear which direction to take. And she was about to be the first (out of 32 grandchildren) in her family to set foot on a college campus. After sharing her uncertainty and fears with her teachers at Ygnacio Valley High School, she was guided to DVC. “They helped me understand my alternatives, and within a few months, I registered as a full-time student.”
Public health professions focus on the prevention of illness, injury and disease to promote and protect the health of people and the communities where they live, work and play. Job responsibilities might include promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, improving health inequities among underserved populations, and detecting, preventing, and responding to infectious diseases, such as COVID-19.
Gordon later enrolled at DVC to earn an associate in arts degree in animation. He had learned about DVC’s foster youth program while in high school, so he met with the coordinator of the Student Transition and Academic Retention Team (START) program.
DVC celebrates and honors the 50th anniversary of the landmark federal legislation referred to as Title IX. According to the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights website, Title IX states, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
For Keisha Holmes, the idea of attending college wasn't in her plans until a state rehabilitation case worker encouraged her to apply to DVC so she could return to the workforce.
DVC horticulture students dig deep, sharing how they have applied their skills both on campus and on the job. The program offers opportunities to learn about plant propagation, aquaponics, hydroponics, irrigation, and more.
