For Bruna, choosing a college meant finding more than just classes - it meant finding a place to belong.
Born and raised in Brazil, Bruna moved to the United States six years ago and quickly realized how confusing the college system can feel for first-generation students. In high school, she often felt unsure where to turn as she prepared for college. But everything changed when DVC’s Student Ambassador Program visited her school.
“I was lost, but DVC took me in,” she shared. That moment introduced her to a community that would shape her future.
Now a full-time biology major planning to transfer to a University of California campus and attend dental school, Bruna balances two part-time jobs while staying focused on her dream of becoming a trilingual dentist. As a first-generation, low-income STEM student, she found powerful support through DVC’s Puente Project, EOPS and MESA programs.
EOPS helped ease financial stress by providing resources like a book voucher, making college more affordable. The Puente Project became her foundation, offering mentorship, university tours, and a close-knit community that reminded her she was capable of achieving more.

Through MESA, she connected with other STEM students who share similar goals, gaining academic support and encouragement in challenging science courses.
At DVC, Bruna didn’t just prepare for transfer - she grew into a leader. She’s a Student Ambassador, scholarship recipient, tutor, and founder of the Brazilian Student Association Club.
