Technology and Books for Student Learning

What if I don’t have a computer or other technology necessary to take a class?

We offer technology loans if you need to borrow a calculator, Chromebook, headphones, webcam, or wi-fi hotspot.

What do I do if my InSite or Canvas is locked?

Contact the IT Helpdesk at 925-229-6888, or submit a ticket request to the IT Helpdesk.

What if I don't have internet access?

If you are in need of wi-fi, borrow a hotspot through our technology loan program.

Where can I find instructions on how to use Zoom or Canvas?

Check out our Online Learning Guides for information about Canvas, Zoom, and other useful college technologies.

How do I get my books?

Order your books and supplies online! They can be shipped directly to you (shipping fee applies) or you can pick them up on campus from the Book Center. You can find the textbooks and supplies for your classes by searching for the class at the Book Center website.

Visit the Pleasant Hill Book Center or the San Ramon Book Center for more details.

When and where do I return laptops, calculators, and other borrowed technology?

You can return equipment borrowed through our technology loan program to:

  • Pleasant Hill Library, 2nd floor, Circulation/Front Desk (PH map - closest parking is Lot 3).
  • San Ramon Library (SR map)

Please check Library hours before arriving. Do not use the library book drop to return technology equipment or rental textbooks - the book drop is for library book returns only.


Registration Services 

I am on a waitlist for a class, but the class is not showing for me in Canvas. What do I do?

Classes will only show up in Canvas for you if you are registered in the class. Students on the waitlist do not have access to the class in Canvas. If the class has started you must email the instructor to request an Add Authorization. If the class is full, the instructor is not obligated to provide permission for you to add the class. Registration in many classes changes daily and continues through the add/drop period (first two weeks for full-term classes). Students may email instructors to inquire about the potential of registering in their section.

How do I contact DVC student services like counseling or the admissions office?

DVC staff are available to answer your questions and assist you on campus or online. Please check department web pages for more information or see our list of Student Services office hours.

I have a question about a specific instructional program or student service. Who can I ask?

Students with subject or discipline specific questions should contact their program lead, department chair or area dean or manager. See the list of DVC contacts by subject/area.

I am currently a high school student, and I want to take a class at DVC in Pleasant Hill or San Ramon. How do I enroll?

All of the "Steps to Enroll" for current high school students can be completed online. Please visit Steps to Enroll for High School Students for step-by-step instructions. Please email Welcome Services with any questions.

I need a form to help with registration or my student record. Where can I find them online?

Most forms are available online and can be submitted electronically. Please visit our electronic forms page. For assistance, email the Admissions and Records Office or call 925-685-1310.

I applied for my degree/certificate. When will I receive it?

Transcripts will be posted with degree information 8-12 weeks after the term ends. All awards will be mailed via USPS. Please log in to your InSite portal account to track the status of your degree and/or certificate. If you have any questions contact the Admissions and Records Office


Financial Support 

I hear there are funds available from the government to help me stay in school during the pandemic. Where can I learn more?

Yes, funding is available to all enrolled DVC students that have an emergency expense related to COVID-19 or their cost of attendance. You do not need to be eligible for federal student aid to qualify. Visit the Covid-19 Emergency Grant page to learn about the funding, how to apply, and how receipt of funding may impact you. If you still have questions about the emergency relief after reviewing the COVID-19 Emergency Grant webpage, send an email to the basic needs staff.

If you have not applied for financial aid, you are high encouraged to complete a FAFSA or CA Dream Act application to help meet your cost of attendance. To learn more about how to apply for financial aid visit the financial aid office.

How can I make a payment other than online?

The DVC Cashier’s Office will be available at the hours listed below to take payments over the phone. Please call 925-969-2105 or email questions to DVCCashiersOffice@dvc.edu.

Do I need to pay for parking this term?

Parking requirements vary by campus. Be sure to check the course details on your schedule to find out which campus your course is held on.


Student Services and Support

I think that I have been exposed to COVID and I am scheduled to attend classes on campus. What should I do?

Students are not permitted to enter the campus and must notify their instructor if: 

  1. they have tested positive for COVID-19,
  2. they are experiencing any COVID-19 symptoms. They must leave the area if they develop symptoms while on campus or,
  3. they have been in close contact (for 15 minutes within 6 feet) with or otherwise exposed to a known or suspected case of COVID-19.

Contra Costa County offers free testing. Visit the CCHS Website to make your appointment and follow the directions included in the confirmation email. Make sure to take your ID for your appointment. You will receive a text message with a link to your results within 24-48 hours. Testing is also available outside of Contra Costa County:

All students should monitor themselves carefully for signs of illness and review the student safety checklist.

Student Centers

Visit our Student Centers to find space to attend your online classes and/or study outside of class time!  You'll find computers, printers, and a specialized support team of peer tutors, faculty and staff to help!


Library

Computers, printers, copiers, individual study space, group study rooms, student ID creation, textbook reserves, equipment checkout, and prayer/meditation room are available for use at the Pleasant Hill Library.

You'll find computers, printer, a pop-up bookstore (first 3 weeks of semester), and a café (open 8 am - 2 pm).

Academic Support Center (ASC)

Visit the San Ramon Academic Support Center to find space to attend your online classes and/or study outside of class time!  You'll find laptops for checkout, printers, and a specialized support team of peer tutors, faculty and staff to help!

How can I get a student ID card?

The Student Union Building will be open to offer student ID cards and other selected services. Students must come in person, and observe masking protocols, to obtain a student ID card. Our in-person summer hours are 6/13/22-8/12/22 Monday - Thursday, 9 am - 3 pm. Staff are available to answer questions during remote hours on Mondays 8 am - 9 am and 3 pm - 6 pm.

DVC’s Counseling Department can help. Our wellness counselors offer free and confidential sessions, and other support resources. Schedule appointment online.

We also offer a telehealth program for students called TimelyCare. This FREE service provides access to 24/7 medical and mental telehealth care. Sign up with your .edu email address.

Our Student Assistance Program – or SAP – is a program designed to help you cope with emotional health, family and other personal problems. Educational institutions provide an SAP to help their students be happy, healthy and productive.

How do I get involved with student government and student life activities?

Both the Inter Club Council and ASDVC are up and running during the fall and spring terms. They will hold their weekly meetings via Zoom with links posted to DVCsync.

I’m having trouble finding the details about when and how (or even if) my class meets. Where can I find instructions/information?

The course schedule  includes “Comments” for each class. These details can help you understand the exact requirements of each class. In your InSite account, these details are found as “Additional Information.” You can also find step-by-step instructions about how to understand your course details and if there are required meetings in our Student Scheduling Guide.

Where can I get information about tutoring?

Free tutoring and support is available online and on campus.  Learn more at our Student Centers homepage

How do I get access to library resources - including textbooks - and services?
