Accreditation

The countdown is on! It is one year until the college has its visit from the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges on October 5, 2020. In preparation for the visit, dozens of faculty, staff, and managers have been writing our Institutional Self-Evaluation Report. The report is due in summer 2020. Watch for opportunities to comment on the draft this fall. The final document will go through our governance process in the spring.

Guided Pathways (GP)

Exciting things continue with the work of implementing DVC’s Educational Master Plan (EMP) through Guided Pathways (GP) work. The Guided Pathways Steering Team (GPST) leads have done an excellent job developing and supporting work groups over the last two years. This year, the college has partnered with Dr. Al Solano who will be providing workshops, support, recommendations, assistance, and coaching for DVC’s work on integrating and implementing the GP framework.

GP teams have morphed in focus and scope into new team configurations: The Success Team, led by Yvonne Canada and Becky Opsata; the Pedagogy Team, led by Kris Koblik, Catherine Franco and Toni Fannin; the Interest Team, led by Kim Schenk and Beth McBrien; and the Connection Team, led by Beth Hauscarriague, Rosa Armendariz, Lupe Daniels, and Taylor Harrison. Finally, the new, college wide Communication Committee will serve as a resource and key partner in implementing many of the communication activities identified by other teams. The teams are currently reviewing and evaluating their work plans, identifying/prioritizing projects, and developing deliverables they can expect to accomplish this academic year. The current collective focus on integration will help ensure there isn’t duplication of work activities.

In order for the college to be successful with implementing GP efforts, the work must begin to converge into an intentional and integrated supportive experience across the student’s journey. Continually evaluating and improving our GP work will be essential for DVC to be successful in developing a nurturing, supportive, and equity focused student experience.

College Council (CC)

At CC’s first meeting of fall 2019, the council:

  • reviewed end of the year committee reports,
  • reviewed the results of the employee technology survey
  • tasked the IITC with updating DVC’s Technology Master Plan,
  • reviewed the Roles, Responsibilities, and Processes booklet,
  • approved criteria for Racial Justice Taskforce outcomes.

Research, Planning and Evaluation Committee (RPEC)

RPEC began the 2019-20 academic year with a new group of classified staff, faculty and administrators who have completed the Data Coaching training, developed over the summer. These coaches will assist the college community in securing data to inform data driven decisions throughout the college.

Activities planned for the year include revisiting the charge of the committee and adjusting it to align with the needs of the college, and completing an analysis of the CCSSE report to further inform the work around the implementation of the EMP and other areas of the campus community.

For more information, please visit: the Research, Planning and Evaluation Committee website. Current Chairs: Becky Opsata (management), Rene Sporer (faculty)

Program Review Committee (PRC)

The PRC has had a change in leadership since last spring, so they are in the process of organizing membership and orienting themselves in their new roles. The new co-chairs are Lindsay Kong and Florence Espiritu. We look forward to their report in the next Governance at a Glance.

Budget Committee (BC)

BC is working on coordinating its membership in preparation for their first meeting, which will take place the week of October 7. Carol Hilton, who served the college as acting VPBAS last spring, will be returning to DVC and will serve again in that role while the college moves forward with plans to a hire a permanent VPBAS to start in January 2020.

Academic Senate Council (ASC)

The DVC Academic Senate Council has already met three times this fall. Two of their goals for the 2019-20 academic year are close to finalization:

  • The Academic Senate Council will support the work that we, Diablo Valley College, must do as a community to achieve the vision of engagement and inclusion exemplified in our 2018-23 Educational Master Plan.
  • The Academic Senate Council will support the work that we, Diablo Valley College, must do as a community to create a more racially just and equitable campus for students, staff, faculty, and administrators of color.

There was also discussion/input about:

  • how to potentially minimize impact on instruction by any future smoke closures,
  • how to improve the functionality/usefulness of the Insite Roster,
  • current work and future direction of campus “Guided Pathways” work,
  • the proposed draft UF contract language about Academic Freedom.

For more information, please visit: the Academic Senate Website. Current leadership: John Freytag, president; Patrick Moe, vice president
